THE UNWRITTEN RULES
RANDOM REC GUIDE
Five strangers. One ball. Twenty minutes. Random Rec works when everybody does the simple things: space the floor, guard somebody, move the ball and stay in the game.
You do not need a 90% win rate. You need good habits, a little patience and the ability to survive one bad possession without declaring war on your teammates.
SHORT ON TIME?
THE RANDOM REC COMMANDMENTS
If you remember nothing else, remember these. Most Random Rec games become playable when five strangers follow a few basic rules.
- 01
Guard your assignment
Do not spend every possession chasing the ball. Start with your matchup, communicate switches and rotate only when there is a real reason.
- 02
Make the easy pass
The open teammate is usually the correct answer. A simple pass made on time is more valuable than a highlight pass made too late.
- 03
Space the floor
Do not stand beside the ball handler, another shooter or the center. Give teammates room to drive, pass and read the defense.
- 04
Cut with a purpose
A good cut attacks open space. A bad cut drags your defender into somebody else’s drive.
- 05
Take open shots
Passing up every open look hurts spacing. Forcing contested shots hurts trust. The goal is not zero misses; it is good decisions.
- 06
Stop calling angry timeouts
A timeout is not a punishment button. Use it to prevent violations, save possession or organize the team—not because somebody else touched the ball.
- 07
Box out before you leak out
The fast break does not start until somebody secures the rebound.
- 08
Stay engaged when you are not scoring
Defense, spacing, screens, rebounding and quick passes still matter. You can help the team without leading the box score.
- 09
Do not quit after one bad run
A six-point deficit is not a funeral. Random Rec becomes impossible when players leave at the first sign of resistance.
- 10
Do not sell
Standing out of bounds, taking violations, refusing to defend or intentionally wasting possessions is not “teaching the team a lesson.” It is just selling.
- 11
Let mistakes end
Do not turn one turnover into four possessions of revenge basketball. Reset, defend and move on.
- 12
Play the role the lineup needs
The build name does not decide every possession. Read the lineup. Sometimes your job is to score; sometimes it is to defend, screen, rebound or move the ball.
