Position-by-Position Responsibilities

Builds blur traditional positions, but every lineup still needs creation, spacing, defense, rebounding and decision-making. Use these as responsibilities, not rigid job descriptions.

Point Guard

Organize the offense and create good decisions for the group.

Good point-guard habits

  • Advance the ball without over-dribbling
  • Identify shooters and cutters early
  • Use screens instead of fighting every screen
  • Pass before help fully commits
  • Keep teammates involved enough that defenders must respect them
  • Know when another player has the better matchup
  • Protect the clock
  • Avoid high-risk inbound and transition passes

Common mistake Believing every possession must prove you are the point guard.

Shooting Guard

Provide spacing, secondary creation and perimeter defense.

Good shooting-guard habits

  • Be ready to shoot on the catch
  • Attack hard closeouts
  • Help advance the ball when pressured
  • Relocate after passes and drives
  • Defend the stronger opposing guard when your build allows
  • Avoid standing beside the point guard waiting for a handoff every possession

Small Forward

Connect the lineup.

Good small-forward habits

  • Fill open spacing
  • Cut when the defense loses sight of you
  • Defend multiple positions
  • Rebound down when the frontcourt needs help
  • Make quick swing passes
  • Attack mismatches without stopping all movement
  • Become the secondary option the lineup lacks

Common mistake Disappearing because the role is less clearly defined.

Power Forward

Balance spacing, help defense and rebounding.

Good power-forward habits

  • Understand whether the center needs the paint or perimeter
  • Box out the opposing forward
  • Rotate as the secondary rim protector
  • Space to the corner or wing when your build can shoot
  • Set occasional off-ball screens
  • Cut behind overhelping defenders
  • Do not abandon the glass to chase transition points every possession

Common mistake Playing like a second center on offense and a third guard on defense.

Center

Control the paint, screens, rebounds and interior decisions without clogging every possession.

Good center habits

  • Set readable screens
  • Roll, pop or slip based on build and coverage
  • Protect the rim without leaving shooters unnecessarily
  • Box out before chasing the rebound animation
  • Throw safe outlets
  • Pass out of crowded post touches
  • Recognize when standing under the basket is blocking a teammate’s drive
  • Use deep seals and size advantages
